Vermicomposting
Centre of Excellence in Vermicomposting
The Centre of Excellence in Vermicomposting aims to promote sustainable waste management practices through the scientific conversion of organic waste into nutrient-rich vermicompost. The centre functions as a hub for research, training, innovation, and community outreach, fostering environmental responsibility and circular economy principles.
The centre focuses on the efficient utilization of biodegradable waste generated from institution, agriculture, and food processing units. By employing eco-friendly vermiculture techniques using earthworm species such as Eisenia fetida and Eudrilus eugeniae, the centre produces high-quality organic manure that enhances soil fertility, improves crop productivity, and reduces dependence on chemical fertilizers.
As a Centre of Excellence, it plays a vital role in capacity building by conducting hands-on training programmes for workshops for students. Research activities at the centre emphasize optimization of composting parameters, nutrient profiling, microbial enrichment, and the evaluation of vermicompost effects on plant growth and soil health.
